First Schistosomiasis Day 2023

On July 26th, 2023, Cameroon achieved a significant milestone in the fight against schistosomiasis with the inaugural Schistosomiasis Day at the Institute of Medical Research and Medicinal Plant Studies (IMPM), organized by the Unit of ImmunoBiology and Helminth Infections (IBHI) supported by the Wellcome Center for Integrative Parasitology. The event aimed to raise awareness and foster scientific networking, drawing a diverse group of attendees, including researchers, healthcare workers, educators, and students. Throughout the day, participants were treated to informative presentations by renowned and engaging discussions by researchers and prominent schistosomiasis experts, including Professor Louis-Albert Tchuem Tchuenté, the Coordinator of the National Programme for the Control of Schistosomiasis and Intestinal Helminthiasis. These presentations delved into the latest research findings, epidemiology, transmission patterns, and control measures, equipping attendees with up-to-date knowledge and innovative approaches. The First Schistosomiasis Day in Cameroon served as a catalyst for increased awareness, knowledge exchange, and united action against the disease. It represented a crucial step forward in the country’s mission to control and eventually eliminate this neglected tropical disease. With determination and collective dedication, the participants demonstrated their commitment to creating a schistosomiasis-free future in Cameroon.
